There is no money to be made in allowing people to wear what they like. It took me a while to figure out what annoyed me so much about festival fashion spreads in magazines, it's because festivals are supposed to be about freedom and partying - not worrying about if your sandals are on trend or not.
I don't know who goes to a festival and worries about these things. I don't. I worry about if my wellies are letting in mud, if I have a hoodie warm enough or if my sleeping bag has a spider in it - Germany 2003 - it was really really grim, but I have never worried about feeling trendy.
I understand why companies compile festival outfits - they have a product to sell, and I agree with pop up festival shops - because people do forget things. However, what I don't like is the boring amount of pages in magazines and blogs given over to festival wear and what not to do. If your not going to a festival then it's boring.
Where what you like, don't worry about what you look like! It's the one time of the year where you can have sequined jackets and face paint on at three in the afternoon and not look like a prick!!! I think the more outrageous, the better! It all works at festivals. So get into the spirit of things!
Another issue I have at the moment is the stupid idea of 'beach jewelery'. This was described to me as jewelry you keep specially for the beach. Lest anyone catch you without a necklace on and your trendiest earrings. WTF?!?!??! I prefer a swimsuit, suncream and a towel - thanks. I recently read an interview with Liz Hurley, talking about her beach jewelry - has the whole world gone mad?
The beach and festivals are a place for chilled out and relaxed glamour - and in the case of festivals, prehaps a little afternoon insanity. So there.
